5 Tips to beat anxiety during the Covid- 19 economic downturn.

Many people all over the world battle with anxiety, even more so now that the world is in chaos. There is a high percentage of people that have lost their jobs and don’t know how they will manage with paying their bills and getting essential things that they need to survive. Others have had to close their businesses because it is not deemed an essential business, or business might be very slow because people are staying home more. We are all feeling the effects of this pandemic, but this too shall pass. So how can we beat our anxiety? Check out some of my tips below.

One way that we can help ourselves is to limit our exposure to the news. At the beginning of this I was obsessed with the news and was reading articles every few minutes that made me panic even more. I could feel it in my body and decided to cut back on the amount of information I was reading. My husband, on the other hand, is still indulging in too much of this information and seem to can’t help himself most days. All in all, I was happy when he decided to start growing some herbs and vegetables in door because this is something that can help with shifting his focus.

Secondly, choose what you focus on. As I mentioned above, my husband now has a little gardening hobby that is taking away some of his focus on the news. We can try to plan our days and determine what we focus on. For me, I focus on writing my blog, cooking meals for us, and doing a bit of exercising. It helps greatly because it gives you something to look forward to and by the time you realize your day will be going on quite well without freaking out about the pandemic and all the economic chaos surrounding it.

Thirdly, staying connected with friends and family is a very good way to deal with anxiety. Everyone will feel better when this happens. I talk to my mom every day and my siblings every few days and it makes me so happy when I get to chat with my niece and nephews, because these little humans will cheer you up in a heartbeat and make you forget everything else. Also, that phone call or video call may be the best thing to bring some happiness to our friends and family during these times.

Fourthly, you can do meditation or listen to music. Again this is something to look forward to. Find a quiet space, light some candles, put on some relaxing music, do some deep breathing techniques and just chill out. There is a popular quote by the Reggae music legend, Bob Marley that says, “When the music hits you, you feel no pain.” Music has a way of making us feel good, we can dance and sing along as this will definitely release some endorphins. My husband and I are always playing music and dancing up a storm whether we are cooking or just chilling and this makes us laugh and put us in a good mood.

The final self care tip to beat anxiety is to engage in self care. Focus on yourself a bit more. This can be in the form of a skin care routine, exercising, getting dressed up in your favorite clothes, massages from your partner and so many other things that we can do. Doing these will make you feel better about yourself and definitely keep anxiety at bay.

At the end of the day, the world will probably take some time to get back to normalcy and in the meantime these tips can help us to be ready when it does. Plus anxiety will compromise our immune system and make us that more susceptible to getting ill. So it’s better to take care of ourselves and to be safe than sorry.
