My top 4 series to stream.

Since we are spending so much time at home, streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and others are some of our go to for entertainment. My husband and I love watching movies and series together and today I will share with you all of our all time favorites.

We really enjoyed Black Sails. This phenomenal series is available on Starz and ran from 2014-2017. It was written by Robert Levine, Jonathan E. Steinberg and others. The directors were Steve Boyum, Alik Sakharov and others. The top series cast included Toby Stevens as Captain Flint, Jessica Parker kennedy as Max, Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie, Zach McGowan as Captain Charles Vane, Luke Arnold as John Silver, Toby Schmitz as Rackham, and Clara Paget as Anne Bonnie. The series is a prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel “Treasure Island”. Black Sails is a pirate adventure that centers around Captain Flint who has a reputation throughout the West Indies as the most brilliant and most feared pirate. Flint fights for survival on New Providence Island after coming there from England. He teams up with prostitutes, slaves, pirates, thieves and others to launch a war on the British and Spanish forces after stealing gold from a Spanish ship in the hopes of using it to make the island better. In the end he doesn’t get to finish his war after finding out that his lover is alive as he goes to be with him. The show had incredible acting and with my background in English Literature, I really appreciated the costume details that truly represented the time that the show was set in.

Next on our list is Breaking Bad. This series ran on AMC from 2008-2013 and is now available on Netflix. Writers included Vince Gilligan (creator), Peter Gould and others. The directors included Michelle MacLauren, Adam Bernstein and others. The top series cast included Bryan Cranston as Walter White, Aaron Paul as Jessie Pinkman, Anna Gunn as Skyler White, Betsy Brandt as Marie Schrader, RJ Mitte as Walter White Jr., Dean Norris as Detective Hank Schrader, Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehramantraut, and Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring. The series centers around Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with an inoperable lung cancer, who turns to making methamphetamine in order to secure his family’s future. Walter recruits Jessie to help him cook meth and the two navigate being the biggest drug dealers, as they are being chased by the FBI, as well as other drug dealers; while trying to keep their family out of their wrong doings. Jessie gets captured and Walter saves him in the end as he seemingly dies from his cancer. The acting was superb and left me wanting more each time I watched an episode.

After going through Breaking Bad withdrawals I found another series called Better call Saul, filmed after Breaking Bad but is a prequel to Breaking Bad. This series was also written by Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould and others. Directors included Vince Gilligan, Thomas Schnauz and others. The show can be seen on AMC, Netflix and Amazon Prime and is now into the fifth season. Top series cast includes Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill, Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, Patrick Fabian as Howard, Michael Mando as Nacho Varga, Michael McKean as Chuck McGill, Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring, as well as some others from Breaking Bad and also new characters. The story centers around Jimmy McGill, and shows his life leading up to when he becomes the crooked lawyer, Saul Goodman. We get to see Jimmy’s relationship with his brother Chuck who knows that Jimmy is a con-artist and doesn’t want him to work at his law firm. Jimmy becomes a lawyer and tries to have his own law practice after being shunned by his brother. Kim and Jimmy are a couple but she seems worried that her relationship with him will not last because of all his shady practices. Season 4 ended with Jimmy ready to transition into an even more crooked lawyer which catapults his career to work with drug dealers in Breaking Bad. Once again, the cast did a phenomenal job bringing the different characters to life. Season 5 is now available for purchase on amazon Prime or you can wait until it is released on Netflix to binge it.

The final series on our list of favorites is called Hell on Wheels and it ran on AMC from 2011-2016. It can now be seen on Nextflix. The writers included Joe Gayton (creator), Tony Gayton and others. The directors included David Von Ancken, Adam Davidson and others. Top series cast included Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, Colm Meaney as Thomas Durant, Robin McLeavy as Eva, Phil Burke as Mikey McGinnes, Christopher Heyerdahl as The Swede, Dohn Norwood as Psalms, rapper Common as Elam Ferguson, Kasha Kropinski as Ruth, Ben Esler as Sean McGinnes, Jennifer Ferrin as Louise Ellison, Dominique McElligot as Lily Bell. Eddie Spears as Joseph Black Moon, Tom Noonan as Reverend Nathaniel Cole, Duncan Ollernshaw as Mr. Toole and David Wilson Marnes as Martin Delaney. The series centers around Cullen Bohannon who was a former confederate soldier whose wife was killed at the hands of the union soldiers and we see him set out for revenge. He ends up looking for his wife’s killers on Hell on Wheels, the moving town that follows the transcontinental US railroad. Bohannon, soon becomes the most important man on the railroad as he is put in charge of it by Grant former president of the USA. We see him being challenged by various characters especially Thomas Durant who was initially in charge of building the railroad. In the end, Bohannon even switched sides and started working for Mr. Delaney who was responsible for building the other part of the railroad and promised Cullen shares in it. Cullen is invited to the white house and asked to be in charge of the army by president Grant. The characters did a great job and the audience got insightful information into a part of the history of the United States and how the railroad was built.

All of these shows had incredible acting and you won’t be disappointed if you watch them. In fact, I guarantee that you won’t want to stop watching them. Some of my other favorites are Money Heist and The Ozark but I didn’t include them in this article because there are still other seasons that I need to watch before I include them into my all time favorite list. Have you watched any of these series? Let me know in the comments. Also, if you have any recommendations of other great shows be sure to tell me in the comments. Xoxo
