As we women age, our bodies find different ways to show it, whether it be gray hair or something more dreaded like cellulite. The cause of cellulite is unknown, but it is really fat beneath our skin and it looks lumpy because it pushes against connective tissues which causes the skin above to look that way. Men also get cellulite but more women get them than men. I don’t think there is a natural way to completely get rid of cellulite but we can takes some steps to reduce them and make them less visible. These steps I will discuss below.
There are a number of things that may contribute to us getting cellulite such as poor diet, slow metabolism, lack of physical activity, hormone changes, total body fat among others.
Ways to reduce cellulite:
This may improve the appearance of cellulite by improving lymphatic drainage. This can be done at home or by a professional massage therapist. This may help stretch out the cellulite dimples as well. You will need to do this consistently to achieve results. Dry brushing as well as jumping up and down on a trampoline can also aid in lymphatic drainage.
Collagen Peptides Supplements
Our skin is made up of 80% collagen. After we turn 30, we start to lose collagen by 1-2 % a year. Hormonal changes result in more collagen loss and thinning of the skin. Collagen comes in forms like pills, powder, liquid and they are added to shakes etc. This can help reduce cellulite because it strengthens connective tissues of the skin. According to a clinical study, collagen peptides get absorbed into the bloodstream and then penetrate and remain in the dermis, triggering collagen production in the skin.
Some leg and glue exercises may help tighten the skin around the thigh region and this may help in the reduction of cellulite. This isn’t a foolproof way to get rid of them but stronger muscles and tighter skin may reduce their appearance. Some exercises that may help include squats, jump squats, step-ups, glute/leg kick backs, side lunges and others. You can also do various aerobic exercises to burn fat like cycling, dancing, hiking, running, swimming and walking.
The foods we eat affect all areas of our lives. An excessively high carbohydrate diet can cause high blood insulin levels and promote lipogenesis or fat formation. This can then result in increased total body fat and enhance cellulite. Some foods that contribute to cellulite include excess sugar, alcohol, salt, refined flour and others. To reduce cellulite with diet we need to:
increase fruit and vegetable intake
Eat proteins such as gelatin, bone broth, nuts, seeds, poultry and fish
Eat whole grains like multi-grain bread, oats.
Your carb intake should be from sweet potatoes, legumes
Replace saturated fats with healthy omega- 3 fats such as oily fish from salmon, sardines, flaxseed, and nuts.
Limit alcohol intake and sweets
Be sure to watch your potion size
These will help but we will have to be consistent if we want to see any changes. It is up to us to make these important lifestyle changes, but a good diet and regular exercise will definitely keep us healthy for years to come.
